High-resolution studies of massive star-forming regions

چکیده
We summarize the status of our program of near-infrared adaptive optics observations of ultracompact Hii regions. By means of selected results we demonstrate the usefulness of this technique for disentangling the complexity of massive star-forming regions. The primary scientific aims of our study are the identification of the ionizing stars, the characterization of the stellar population, the clarification of the role of dust for the excitation of the Hii region and, last but not least, the search for circumstellar disks surrounding high-mass stars. We present results obtained by adaptive optics observations and additional measurements for G45.45+0.06, G5.89-0.39, and G309.92+0.48 to illustrate our scientific objectives.

Outflow and Accretion in Massive Star Forming Regions
In order to distinguish between the various components of massive star forming regions (i.e. infalling, outflowing and rotating gas structures) within our own Galaxy, we require high angular resolution observations which are sensitive to structures on all size scales. To this end, we present observations of the molecular and ionized gas towards massive star forming regions at 230 GHz from the S...
متن کامل6 Massive Quiescent Cores in Orion . – II . Core Mass Function
We have surveyed submillimeter continuum emission from relatively quiescent regions in the Orion molecular cloud to determine how the core mass function in a high mass star forming region compares to the stellar initial mass function. Such studies are important for understanding the evolution of cores to stars, and for comparison to formation processes in high and low mass star forming regions....
متن کاملHigh-mass Star Formation in the Southern Hemisphere Sky
We report on a multi-wavelength (IR to cm) and multi-resolution (1 mas to 20 arcsec) exploration of high-mass star formation regions in the Galactic plane, at longitudes observable from the Southern Hemisphere. Our source sample was originally identified through methanol masers in the Galactic plane, which exclusively trace high-mass star-forming regions. (Sub)millimetre continuum and molecular...
متن کاملProbing the initial conditions of high-mass star formation
Most work on high-mass star formation has focused on observations of young massive stars in protoclusters. Very little is known about the preceding stage. Here, we present a new high-resolution study of pre-protocluster regions in tracers exclusively probing the coldest and dense gas (NH2D). The two target regions G29.96−0.02 and G35.20−1.74 (W48) are drawn from the SCAMPS project, which search...
متن کاملThe structure and early evolution of massive star forming regions - Substructure in the infrared dark cloud SDC13
Context. Investigations into the substructure of massive star forming regions are essential for understanding the observed relationships between core mass distributions and mass distributions in stellar clusters, differentiating between proposed mechanisms of massive star formation. Aims. We study the substructure in the two largest fragments (i.e. cores) MM1 and MM2, in the infrared dark cloud...
